NEW DELHI: Air India and Air India Express have decided to retire the number '171' following the crash of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner AI 171 in Ahmedabad. From June 17, the Ahmedabad-London Gatwick route will be operated as 'AI 159' instead of 'AI 171'. A change has been made in the booking software in this regard.
It has also been decided to retire the number 'IX 171' of the Surat-Sharjah flight. It is customary to retire flight numbers as a tribute to those who died in accidents. In 2020, the number 1344 of the Air India Express flight that crashed in Kozhikode was also retired. 21 people were killed that day.
