NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has firmly stated that India does not require third-party mediation on the Kashmir issue, reaffirming the country’s long-standing stance on the matter. The remark came during a 35-minute phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who briefed the media on the call, Modi reiterated that all disputes between India and Pakistan should be resolved bilaterally, without external involvement. The Prime Minister also clarified that the recent de-escalation along the border, following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, occurred at Pakistan’s request.

Modi reportedly informed Trump that India's targets were only terrorist camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, and that India has always maintained that no mediation is necessary in the India-Pakistan matter- not just now, but always. According to reports, Modi spoke with Trump over the phone at the latter's request.

Misri also made it clear that Modi did not discuss either an India-US trade deal or the India-Pakistan issue with Trump during the conversation.

Modi said that the ceasefire agreement was reached through direct talks between India and Pakistan, and that too at Pakistan’s request. There had been claims that the U.S. President had mediated the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Modi has now completely denied those claims.
