CHENNAI: Further stoking the ongoing Hindi imposition debate, former union minister Pon Radhakrishnan called Tamils ungrateful for not celebrating Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement lauding Tamil as one of the oldest languages in the world.

Addressing the media during an event, the former union minister said, "Narendra Modi is the first prime minister to have proclaimed that Tamil is one of the oldest languages in the world."

"The Tamil language is older than Sanskrit and if we had any love for the language, we would've celebrated it for a year. Tamils are ungrateful," Pon Radhakrishnan added.

Pon Radhakrishnan is a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader who was the lone member BJP MP from Tamil Nadu in 2014.

Pon Radhakrishnan's statement comes amid protests in the state over Amit Shah's recent Hindi push.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has announced a state-wide protest on September 20 at all district headquarters.

Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief Kamal Haasan has also warned the Centre of an agitation larger than Jalikattu if there is a fight over language.
