THRISSUR: Only minor sections have been charged against the accused in the incident where a Youth Congress leader V S Sujith was brutally assaulted at the Kunnamkulam police station. With this, the police have set protection for the accused officers. Even after the visuals of the attack surfaced, only a charge that can lead to one year jail term has been charged against the accused. Only section of IPC 323 of beating with hands has been charged against the accused. The CCTV footage of Sujith being assaulted emerged after a two-year legal battle.

The police have got legal advice that two sentences cannot be imposed in the incident. The promotion of all four policemen has been stopped for three years. Their increment has been stopped for two years. Therefore, the police have received legal advice that no further departmental action is possible. The legal advice received by the police is that further action is sufficient as per the court decision.

The Congress has decided to intensify the protest against the attack towards Sujith. KPCC President Sunny Joseph will meet Sujith at the DCC office today. Sujith had stated yesterday that the fight will continue until the accused police officers are removed from service. Sunny Joseph responded that if strong action is not taken, protests will be staged on September 10 at the stations where the guilty police officers work.

The truth came to light when the CCTV footage of the incident that took place on April 5, 2023, was released through a legal battle Sujith had intervened when police threatened his friends standing on the roadside, prompting the officers to take him to the station in a jeep, where he was further assaulted. Sub inspector Nuhman along with CPOs Saseendran, Sandeep and Sajeevan had also brutally beaten Sujith.
