Missions to take humans to the Moon and build homes there are currently active. Now, new footage has emerged showing a meteor striking the Moon. The video, which shows a meteor impact that took place on the night of October 30, has gone viral on social media. It was amateur astronomer Daichi Fujii who shared this rare footage.

Since the Moon has no atmosphere, meteors do not produce bright streaks of light as they do on Earth. Instead, they crash directly onto the lunar surface, creating bright flashes and new craters. The impact occurred east of the Gassendi crater, a well-known lunar landmark. Experts believe it may be linked to the Southern or Northern Taurid meteor showers. These meteors travel at a speed of approximately 27 kilometres per second, and the impact is estimated to have created a crater about three meters in diameter.

According to the video, the bright flash lasted for around 0.1 seconds. Scientists are now waiting for images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to confirm the event and capture details of the new crater and its surroundings. These observations could improve our understanding of meteor activity and its effects on the Moon. They will also provide valuable insights for future lunar missions.
