VIZHINJAM: A foreign tourist was bitten by a stray dog at Kovalam Lighthouse Beach on Saturday. Pauline (32) from Russia was injured in the incident. The staff at the nearby restaurant, who witnessed the attack, said the foreigner was attacked by the dog without any provocation while she was strolling on the beach alone.

Pauline, who suffered a deep wound on the front of her right ankle, was taken to the Vizhinjam Community Health Centre and given primary treatment. She was then referred to the General Hospital.

The hotel owner said that the same dog had previously bitten and injured three people, including a lifeguard. The lifeguards said that another dog wandering on the beach on Saturday morning chased a foreigner. Since foreigners feed them, many dogs tend to camp on the beach. The presence of feral dogs in Kovalam is rising at a time of tourists’ influx in the area.
