Mechanic dies after college bus gearbox explodes in Chengannur

CHENGANNUR: A mechanic died tragically when a bus gearbox exploded while repairs were ongoing in a college bus. An auto driver who was nearby suffered serious injuries. The victim was identified as Kattachira Kunjumon (61), a native of Changanassery.

Kunjumon reached Chengannur IHRD College from his workshop at 7 pm yesterday to repair the turbine of the college bus. During the repair, the gearbox exploded with a loud noise.

The driver of the autorickshaw that brought Kunjumon to the college was assisting him with a torchlight. Both of them were rushed to a private hospital in Kallissery in critical condition, but Kunjumon died.

The bus driver, Sajeendran, a native of Perissery, jumped out after hearing the noise and was saved. The area was filled with smoke following the explosion. A piece of metal that fell from the bus shattered the glass of a nearby car. The police, led by Chengannur DySP M. K. Binukumar and the Chengannur Fire Force, reached the spot.
