KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has set a record pace in disposing of cases. The court, which disposed of 1,02,963 cases in 2024, has disposed of 1,09,239 cases so far in 2025. This is an increase of more than six percent. This achievement is due to teamwork between the bench and the bar.
Justice P.V. Kunhikrishnan is at the top this time too - with 15,026 cases. Justice C.S. Dias (8,713), Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas (7,627) and Justice C.P. Mohammed Nias (5,936) are also in the forefront.
However, the number of pending cases is a cause for concern. 2,07,081 cases are pending in the civil category alone. Of these, 1,47,963 cases are more than a year old. In the criminal category, there are 50,785 cases. 34,835 of these are more than a year old.
Legal experts have pointed out that the main reasons for the delay in cases are the shortage of staff and the complexity of procedures. The increase in cases is also causing a backlog despite the introduction of systems such as e-filing.
