Russian tourist nearly drowns while swimming, rescued by Malayalis

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A foreign tourist who drowned while swimming in the sea was rescued by lifeguards at Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram. he tourist, identified as Andre, had arrived in Kerala from Russia. The incident occurred after he was caught in a strong undercurrent while swimming in the sea.

The incident took place at around 4 pm on Friday. Andre had entered the sea at Lighthouse Beach, unaware that the undercurrent was extremely strong. As he began to drown, he raised his hand and called for help. Lifeguard supervisor Sundaresan and lifeguards Akhil M. Nair and G. Shaji, who were on duty at the beach, swam towards him and brought him safely to the shore. He was given the necessary first aid after the rescue.

Lifeguards said that more than ten people have been caught in strong undercurrents while swimming at Lighthouse Beach over the past two weeks.
