NEW DELHI: Online platforms will put an end to the '10-minute delivery' promises following instructions from the Central government. The move comes after complaints from delivery workers, also known as gig workers, who raised concerns about safety and work pressure.
After intervention by Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, platforms such as Blinkit removed the 10-minute delivery claim from their branding. Blinkit revised its tagline from “delivery of over 10,000 products within 10 minutes” to “delivery of over 30,000 products”. Other platforms, including Zepto, Swiggy and Zomato, are also expected to make similar changes in line with the government’s directive.
Gig workers have been protesting against the 10-minute delivery model, stating that the pressure to meet tight timelines forces them to speed, increasing the risk of road accidents. They have also highlighted issues related to heavy workload and low wages. The protests are being carried out under the banner of the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT), which represents delivery workers and drivers associated with companies such as Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto and Amazon.
The government’s instructions were issued after the Labour Minister held discussions with representatives of Blinkit, Zepto, Swiggy and Zomato. The Central government’s new Labour Code includes provisions to recognise gig workers and platform workers, and to introduce social security measures for them.
