TEHRAN: The Ministry of External Affairs has warned Indians in Iran to leave the country immediately. This comes as the possibility of a US attack on Iran, where anti-government protests are raging, is high. India's move is to ensure the safety of its citizens in the current situation, despite good relations with Iran. It is also advised to avoid travelling to Iran.
Iran's military is on high alert in light of US President Donald Trump's threat of immediate intervention to help the protesters. Iran has suspended diplomatic engagement with senior US officials. Trump had threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on countries that trade with Iran the other day.
Iran has warned countries in the region where American military bases are located that it will destroy these bases if the US intervenes. As a precaution, the US has begun evacuating some personnel from its military bases in the region, including Al Udeid in Qatar.
Elon Musk's Starlink satellite service has been made free for those in Iran. Starlink satellite terminals are used to bypass the government and broadcast information about the protests to the Internet. The military is using jammers to block this. Experts point out that the protests have not brought Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's regime to the brink of collapse and that the security forces are fully with the government.
Death toll passes 2,600
The number of people killed in Iran since Dec 28 has crossed 2,600. More than 18,000 people have been arrested. Iran had announced that Erfan Soltani would be hanged today in connection with the protests. It is not clear whether the sentence was carried out as communication systems, including the internet, were disrupted. The protests that began against the economic crisis flared up as anti-government protests. Iran has accused the US-Israeli conspiracy of being behind everything and that terrorists who had infiltrated the protesters were behind the deaths.
If they hang them, you're going to see some things... We will take very strong action if they do such a thing."
- Donald Trump,
President, U.S.
