NEW YORK: The Washington Post continued its massive layoff policy, even impacting prominent journalists who had served with the paper for years. It is speculated that more than 300 staff have been laid off in the last few days. Ishaan Tharoor, son of Congress MP and author Shashi Tharoor, is among the journalists affected by the decision.
The management said that 12 overseas bureaus will continue to function, with the promise of providing acute reporting. The financial losses incurred and the decline in subscription and traffic are said to have made management go with the decision. The paper will henceforth focus on national politics and health rather than geopolitics.
Earlier, there was a huge controversy after WaPo decided not to send journalists to cover the 2026 Winter Olympics. The decision was changed later. It is reported that the paper even laid off the New Delhi Bureau chief as part of its policy.
Ishan Tharoor:
“I have been laid off today from the @washingtonpost, along with most of the International staff and so many other wonderful colleagues. I'm heartbroken for our newsroom and especially for the peerless journalists who served the Post internationally — editors and correspondents who have been my friends and collaborators for almost 12 years. It's been an honour to work with them.
I launched the WorldView column in January 2017 to help readers better understand the world and America's place in it, and I'm grateful for the half a million loyal subscribers who tuned into the column several times a week over the years”
