GURUVAYUR: A woman was found dead after allegedly setting herself on fire. The deceased has been identified as Jumaila (50), a native of Iringapuram. Her family has alleged that threats from moneylenders were behind her death. She was found burnt to death in the yard behind her house in the morning. Her children said that the harassment from people who had lent her money at high interest led to her suicide.
According to her son Shinas, Jumaila had borrowed Rs 50,000 on interest about a year ago. However, she was unable to pay the interest for the past two months. He alleged that the woman who had lent the money came to their house and threatened her. Before ending her life, Jumaila reportedly left a note stating that threats from the moneylenders were the reason for her death.
Meanwhile, police said they have not received any formal complaint regarding Jumaila’s death. However, Guruvayur Police SHO Satheesh Kumar said that a case has been registered based on the contents of the suicide note and an investigation is underway.
