THRISSUR: A 26-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing 12 sovereigns of gold after befriending a priest by visiting his house under the pretext of seeking help to resolve her personal problems. The accused has been identified as Soorya, a native of Parekkattukara in Kodakara.
The theft took place at the house of Ajesh, a priest and native of Moolamkudam. The incident occurred on the 16th of February. According to the police, Soorya used to visit Ajesh’s house frequently for poojas. During one such visit, when the priest went to the kitchen, she allegedly stole gold ornaments weighing 12 sovereigns that were kept in a cupboard. Police said the accused later sold the stolen gold at a private institution in Kodakara. She used the money to buy new gold jewellery and household appliances. She also redeemed her own pledged jewellery using the stolen money.
At the time of her arrest, Soorya was reportedly wearing some of the stolen ornaments. As there were no initial clues or evidence in the case, the police identified and arrested her through scientific investigation methods. The arrest was carried out by a team led by Kodakara Police Inspector Jerlin V. Scaria along with other officers.
