THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As intense heat continues across Kerala, electricity consumption in the state is rising sharply. Over the past week, the state has recorded an increase in power demand. Peak-time electricity usage crossed 5,300 megawatts for the first time this month. On Wednesday, the peak demand reached 5,322 megawatts. The state’s all-time peak power consumption record is 5,797 megawatts, recorded on May 2, 2024. The total electricity consumption on Wednesday was 100.81 million units. Of this, 75.29 million units were purchased from outside the state, while 25.51 million units were generated locally.
Last summer, occasional rains helped reduce temperatures, which in turn kept electricity consumption relatively lower. However, this year temperatures are rising across almost all districts in the state, leading to increased power usage.
Yellow alert in eight districts
Amid rising temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in eight districts. According to the IMD, maximum temperatures may reach 37°C in Kannur and Kasaragod, while temperatures may rise to 36°C in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Palakkad.
Meanwhile, due to a high UV index, an orange alert has been issued in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram districts.
