Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who was dazzling throughout the 98th Academy Awards ceremony, is now in the news over her reaction to Spanish actor Javier Bardem's statement, “No to war, free Palestine”.
It was no big surprise as celebrities often use the big stage to make political statements, and the star-studded event has witnessed many in previous years. The last big one happened when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after taking offence over the latter's statement about Smith’s wife.
Bardem and Chopra were invited to the stage to open the envelope to reveal the winner of the best international film, but then the Spanish legend had other plans. He openly advocated for Palestine and made the statement, resulting in massive applause from the crowd. The call for solidarity for Palestine from Bardem was treated with a nod by Priyanka, but netizens delved more into her reaction, which continues to be discussed online.
Many said Priyanka was not having Bardem use the spot to bring politics. The duo later gave the award to the Norwegian film Sentimental Value. Debates are ongoing on social media to ascertain whether Priyanka’s reaction was an endorsement of Bardem’s politics or not.
