MUMBAI: Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh has reacted to the selectors’ decision to leave out Shubman Gill from India's T20 World Cup squad this year. Yuvraj said the decision was a tough one, especially since Gill has led the team in Tests and ODIs. He expressed his disappointment in an interview with Sports Tak.
“It is not easy to perform consistently in all three formats, especially when you are also the captain. In the past, only Virat Kohli has managed to perform well across all formats and lead the team successfully. Rohit Sharma has also shown that ability at times. But playing a cricketer in the T20 team for a full year and then dropping him from the World Cup squad based only on performance is a very tough decision,” Yuvraj said.
At the same time, Yuvraj also said that the team management should bring clarity regarding the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
“I don’t know what Rohit and Virat are thinking. It looks like they still want to play the next World Cup. But the final decision should be taken by them along with the selectors. Let them decide the team’s future. My point is that there should be clarity when it comes to senior players like them. Everyone should sit together in a room and discuss things openly.
At this stage of their careers, such conversations can be difficult. When they hear that the team is looking at younger players, they may feel upset. But after a year, they will feel happy that someone spoke the truth to them directly. Honestly, such open discussions are not common in Indian cricket,” Yuvraj Singh added.
