THIRUVANNATHAPURAM: Unable to bear hunger, her child started eating handfuls of sand. The mother could no more bear this sight and she finally hands over four of her elder children to Child Welfare board - Believe it, this shocking incident happened under the nose of Secretariat, the epicentre of State administration.

The mother had to take that heart-breaking decision as she had no other way to stave off her children’s appetite. The family lives in a shanty at a Railway-owned Puramboke land at Kaithamukku. Out of her six children, the Child Welfare board has adopted four.

The mother, in her petition to the board, had mentioned that one of her kids ate sand when he was very hungry. The family comprising the mother, father and six children, lived in a shanty covered with Tarpaulin.

The father is a daily-wage labourer who is the sole bread-winner of the family. But the mother in her complaint said that he used to come home drunk and beat up children.

Two children of ages 3-month old and 1.5 yr were not handed over to the board. If the mother won’t be able to bring them up, the board will adopt them also.

The four children have been shifted to Thycaud Ammathottil.

The Child Welfare board will take care of their education and arrangements will be made for their parents to go there and see their children. The board will remain the custodian of the children till they attains 18 years.

Meanwhile, after coming across the plight of the mother and kids, City Mayor Sreekumar rushed to the spot and offered temporary job for the mother and offered a flat for stay.
