KOLLUR: Legendary singer K J Yesudas, who turned 80 on Friday, made his visit to Kollur Mookambika temple on the day. This is a practice he has been following since decades back.

The abode of the Goddess of letters and art soaked in music and festival fervour as devotees and Yesudas fans thronged the temple to be part of the music festival held annually. The music festival is held to pay respect to the singer who have captured millions of hearts through his celestial voice and unique manner of rendition. Many people including personalities from the film field had started camping in a round the temple since Thursday night to meet Yesudas and wish him on his birthday.

Yesudas accompanied by his wife, three sons and their families had reached Kollur on Thursday night itself. He started this practice of visiting the temple on January 10 about four and a half decades ago. He would dash to the temple, from whichever part of the world he may be stationed at.

This is the day when he surrenders his mind, body and music to deity Mookambika or Matha Saraswathy. In front of the Goddess, he would render keerthanas to purify his singing, seek blessings and return with positive energy.

Yesudas and his family members reached Kollur after alignment flight at Mangaluru airport at around 9 pm on Thursday. They were received by Temple Trustee P V Abhilash. After taking a dip in Souparnika river early morning, he had darshan of the deity. The singer and family took part in the pujas led by Ramachandra Adiga. A special Chandiga homam was performed and after which he sang keerthanas.

Afternoon Yesudas will take part in the one-day music festival condcuted by singer Kanjangadu Ramachandran as a tribute to Yeudas.

The annual music festival had started in 2000 when Yesudas turned 60.

The music session will continue till evening. Yesudas will also give away the sixth Souparnika award, instituted by the festival committee to Kochi musician T S Radhakrishnan at the music venue.
