'Don't know whether we will survive or not...'; situation in USA becoming worse

covid

"Don't know whether we will survive or not..." says Arun who lives in Florida as the US is struggling to combat the outbreak of novel coronavirus. The situation is the same in almost all the major cities in the US as the country was clearly late in implementing strict instructions to fight the virus.

Till yesterday, a total of 8453 people in the US have lost their lives to coronavirus while the total number of cases has surpassed 3,00,000. Around 1048 people including a Keralite have died in the last 24 hours.

"The death rate is high in New York, Louisiana, California and Chicago. While the authorities are giving special attention to capital city Washington, all institutions except those working in the health sector have been shut down. Everyone is pretty much tensed that the situation will become much worse," said Dr Babu Stephen, a Malayali entrepreneur based in the US.

The New York City Subway has not been shut down yet in order to facilitate the travel of people working in the health sector. It must be noted that the New York City Subway is one of the largest public transport systems in the world that connects various places.

Dr Meena T Pillai, who has been living in California for the last one year, says, "Upon calling the hospital, the staff there responds by saying that one shouldn't come there unless one can't even breathe properly. Even those people experiencing fever and coughs are advised to stay at homes and practise sanitization. In the US, most of the common people prefer not to go to hospitals as they may have to pay large sums of money despite having insurance. The healthcare system here is completely under the control of insurance companies and pharmaceutical giants. While Hollywood stars and sports stars announce that they have tested positive for coronavirus, the common people are struggling as the testing is pretty expensive here. They cannot simply afford medical test and subsequent treatment. This is the main issue in the US right now. The situation here makes me realise that we must give special importance to our public education system as well as our public health system."
