CHENNAI: In a case of female infanticide, police in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, arrested a man and his mother for murdering his four-day-old baby girl.

K Thavamani, 33, who works as a clerk in a private travels at Uthangudi in Madurai, and his mother Pandiammal, 57 were arrested by the Chozhavandan police for murdering the baby girl.

The child was fed Erukkam Paal (the toxic milk of Calotropis gigantea or crown flower) and subsequently smothered to death on May 14. Thavamani and Chitra couple already have three daughters. Chitra gave birth to a healthy baby child at a primary health centre on March 10.

The family was unhappy over the fourth child also being a girl. In this backdrop the child died and was reportedly buried near the Vaigai River. The family tried to cover up the incident saying the child died of illness.

But local people raised suspicion over the hasty way in which the infant was buried and informed the Village Administrative Officer Samaiyan who in turn lodged a complaint with the Chozhavandan police. Initially, Thavamani told the police he had informed the village health nurse that the child developed sudden illness and died.

After the body was exhumed on Saturday in the presence of Vadipatti tahsildar R.Krishnakumar and an autopsy was performed by doctors from the government Rajaji Hospital, the murder came to light. Thavamani later confessed to killing the child with his mother's help.

The baby's mother Chitra was unaware of the incident as she was allegedly away from home, gone to a shop, at the time.

Thavamani and Pandiammal were produced in different courts and remanded in custody on Sunday.

In March this year, two female infanticide cases were reported, one near Andipatti in Theni district, and another at Usilampatti in Madurai district.
