Hike in electricity charge, HC seeks explanation from KSEB

bill

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has sought an explanation from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) on the plea against the unprecedented hike in the electricity tariff from consumers during the lockdown. The proceedings are based on a petition challenging the unscientific method of the billing. M C Vinayan of Moovattupuzha Payipra panchayat member approached the court. The steep power bill during the lockdown has caused massive protests. The tariff changed when power consumption increased and this resulted in a sharp increase in the bill.

The consumers usually get the bill bi-monthly but due to the lockdown they got the bill very late. There is a subsidy for 240 units but due to the average bill many lost it. The plaintiff’s demand is that the court should intervene in it.

The court will consider the plea after getting an explanation from the KSEB. The plea alleged that there are lapses in preparing the four-month bill together. The plaintiff informed the court that the action of the KSEB has incurred huge loss to consumers. The argument of them is that consumption increased during lockdown and this reflected in the bill.
