Three more bodies recovered in Pettimudi today; Death toll reaches 55; 15 still missing

IDUKKI: Three more bodies of the missing plantation workers who got buried live in the massive landslide that struck Pettimudi in Rajamala were recovered on Wednesday. The body were recovered in the search that started this morning and went through evening.

With this, the number of people who died in the calamity has become 55. Again, fifteen more people are to be found out. Of that, most of them are children. Rescue operators are conducting more search in the river using equipment including drone.

It has been six days today since the search began. The rescue operation is progressing with strict adherence to Covid protocol as the fear of the pandemic prevails in the area.

Since it is the day of the search, most of the bodies recovered on the day were in a decomposed state. DNA tests are likely to be conducted to identify the bodies.

A search will also be conducted in the river which is five kilometers away from the accident spot. Currently, the search is being carried out with the participation of the NDRF, police, fire brigade, forest department, revenue, various people's representatives and volunteers.
