Heavy rain lashes southern Kerala; five districts on alert

KOLLAM: Heavy rain continues unabated in Kerala. Many low lying areas in southern Kerala has submerged. Water levels have also increased in rivers of Southern Kerala.


The low-pressure belt formed in the Arabian sea, near Kavaratti is the chief cause behind the heavy rains in southern Kerala.

Reports indicate that heavy rains will continue all day-long. It is expected that the low-pressure belt will become inactive in the next 48 hours. Govt has sent alert messages to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur. Orange alert is also proclaimed in Kollam and Alappuzha districts. Reports also say that there is likely to be heavy rains across the state on Monday.

IMD has issued a warning to seafaring fishermen as there are chances for strong winds and large waves.
