KOTTAYAM: Treatment of the tree, the branches of which were cut off for road development will commence on Sunday. The money for treatment of the tree was collected through social media.

K Binu, also known as physician of trees will lead a team to treat the tree. The branches of the tree were cut off for the road development in Erattupetta-Kanjirapally stretch.

At morning, the tree will be cleansed. The treatment involves stuffing the outer barks of the tree with a solution of sand, banana and cow milk for about four hours. The cost of the treatment is about Rs 15,000.

Earlier Binu has written a post on Facebook with the branchless picture of the tree. He had also asked the public to contribute to the treatment of the tree. As of Saturday Rs 11,000 has secured. About four years ago, The district water authority has decided to maintain the tree citing that its presence is not dangerous.

However, recently Thidanad panchayat secretary has filed an application before the collector to cut off certain branches of the tree which pose a grave threat to the public. On receiving collector’s nod, instead of cutting the ‘dangerous’ branch, panchayat secretary, cut off all the branches of the tree making it a mere stem. On seeing the sad plight of the tree, environment activists launched a campaign to save the tree.

After the treatment is done a statement of the tree will read, thanking all those who helped to rejuvenate it.
