Heavy rain causes widespread damage across state, blue alert in Idukki dam

IDUKKI: There is a warning of heavy rains to continue in the state. In this situation, yellow alert has been issued in 11 district. The alert was issued in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. Heavy rains will continue in North Kerala tomorrow and day after tomorrow. The heavy rains in the state came as the low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal turned into a severe depression.

Widespread damage was reported across the state in the heavy rain and winds. Trees fell on top of many houses in the strong winds that lashed Alappuzha early this morning. The roof of Thumboli St Thomas High School collapsed. Electric lines were snapped in many places of the city. Irrigation officials said that the shutters will be raised at 11 am as the water level in Walayar Dam has risen due to the heavy rains.

A house was destroyed in the rain and wind at Mannarcaud in Palakkad. The roof of Muhammadkutty’s house collapsed. The heavy rains that lashed early morning witnessed severe damages.

The first alert was issued at the Idukki dam in the wake of the water level rising excessively. The blue alert was announced when the water level reached 2391.04 feet. As per the norms of the Central Water Commission, an orange alert will be issued at 2396.85 feet and red alert at 2397.85 feet. The dam will be opened when water level touches 2398.85 feet. The situation is being examined, according to KSEB.
