Blind man dies in tragic accident on White Cane Safety Day

KOLLAM: A blind man who went out to sell lotteries with his white cane met with a tragic death on the White Cane Safety Day. V Rajan (55), of Aneesh Bhavan in Kottarakkara, died in an accident involving an autorickshaw near Chengamanad Thumbicode School near Kottarakkara.

An autorickshaw after hitting the man on his back didn't stop as he died on the spot. This autorickshaw and driver Raheem, a native of Sadanandapuram, was taken into custody by the police later. He was charged with homicide. The dead body was handed over to the kin after postmortem. Wife: Saraswathy. Son: Aneesh Kumar.

Rajan was blind right from his birth and earned a living for his family including wife and children by selling lotteries. He sold lotteries near the KSRTC bus stand near Kottarakkara. He lived in a rented house for the past 30 years. Three years back, Melila village panchayat granted him a house under Life Housing Scheme. His untimely demise came at a time when the house warming day was fast approaching. Rajan's wife Saraswathi was being treated for vertebrae related ailments and other health conditions for the past 10 years. His son Aneesh do tile works.
