KOLLAM: Kollam Kulangara native Anilkumar had been working under a KSEB contractor for the past 30 years. His job was to draw KSEB's new line at Vallikeezhu. On January 21, he got electrocuted when he climbed on the post to draw the line at Ramankulangara near Kollam. He had climbed on the post after the sub-engineer informed the contractor that the line was turned off. However, a delay in turning off the line resulted in Anilkumar getting electrocuted and hanging on the safety belt. Though he was rushed to a hospital, both his hands got completely burnt. Within two days, his left arm was amputated. All attempts by the doctors to protect at least the right hand failed. Within a week, his right arm was also amputated.

Nine months later, Anil has received a new pair of hands. The Mayo Electric hands, that can be attached to the wrist, was set up under the leadership of Dr Lakshmi Nair of KIMS hospital Thiruvananthapuram. This is the first time such a hand has been placed on a person in South India. The hands, worth Rs 8 to 10 lakh, were given to Anil Kumar free of cost. When the left hand is switched on, the thumb moves backwards and gets activated. The right hand moves through a sensor that is attached to the right foot. The hand will function by recognizing the condition of the muscles based on the movement of the foot. The hands will be able to perform basic needs. Anil has already begun using the left hand. The right hand is being kept in hospital due to some technical reason. It will be attached soon.

It was the contractor who looked after the medical expenses of Anil. KSEB officials had raised some money for his treatment. His wife Ajitha could not go to work in the cashew factory as she had to look after Anil Kumar. Anil does not have his own house as he had to sell it to arrange money for his daughters' weddings.
