THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The BJP is desperately trying to take control of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation at any cost. V V Rajesh, party chief of the district, will lead the army from the front. He will contest from Poojappura, the party’s sitting seat. Although the post of corporation mayor is reserved for women this time, it is clear that the BJP is aiming to fight hard and bring Rajesh to power. The party hope that nominating a state leader to contest in the corporation will create great excitement among the workers.
The BJP's move is to field only those who are likely to win the seat. Youths, professionals and ordinary people have been included in the candidates list. The BJP reckons that it can easily reap the benefits as the CPI (M) is in a dilemma over the gold smuggling and Bineesh Kodiyeri issue.
In the 2015 corporation elections, the BJP shocked the CPM and the Congress by increasing its membership to 34. This time they expect to win double the number of seats. The development of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport will be BJP’s main campaign subject. In addition, Vizhinjam Port, Technopark Development and Waterways will be actively promoted. The party hopes that through this they will be able to bring youths to their side. BJP state chief K Surendran had the other day asserted that if the NDA wins the municipal elections, it will make Thiruvananthapuram a world-class city. Surendran had alleged that the development stagnation in the capital was due to the corruption of those who ruled the corporation in the past.
The main allegation of the BJP is that both the fronts neglected the development of the city. The BJP pointed that the corporation and the state government did nothing to implement the projects brought by the central government for urban development in a timely manner.
