KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Monday ordered the State Election Commission to recast the reservation for offices of presidents and chairpersons in local bodies. This will be applicable to the upcoming election. The single bench ruled that the practice of continuously reserving the offices of chairpersons and presidents of the same local body for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and women was not legal.
The order was issued on the petitions filed against the consecutive reservation for the office of chairpersons and presidents in various local bodies across the state. A rotation system as per the Constitution should be implemented when it comes to the reservation for the offices of the chairpersons and presidents, the court said.
