KOCHI: The Ernakulam South police on Sunday arrested Jovi George (37) in connection with the theft of 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery from his elder brother's quarters. Vijo George, Jovi's brother, is an Income Tax officer who lives at quarters no 73 in Panampally Nagar. Police said that Jovi was caught with the help of CCTV footage.

The incident took place on October 29. The stolen gold belongs to Vijo's wife's sister. Jovi said that the theft was done to pay off the debt that he incurred by playing cards. Rs 1.5 lakh was recovered from him. Jovi lived in the quarters three months ago. During this time, Vijo gave him his scooter and spare key of his house. The accused opened the door of the house using this key.

Jovi robbed the jewellery when the family went to Muvvatupuzha to attend a function. Some of the gold jewellery was mortgaged to a private moneylender in Muvattupuzha. The rest was sold to an institution in Perumbavoor. He then stayed in places like Bangalore and Mumbai before returning to Kochi. The police team lead by South SI Vinoj arrested Jovi as soon as he reached Ernakulam.
