THRISSUR: The youth, who brutally murdered an engineering student for refusing his marriage proposal, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Thrissur District Principal Sessions Court. The convict, Vadakkekad native Nidheesh, has also been slapped a fine of Rs 5 lakh. Apart from the life imprisonment, he was also sentenced to nine years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15,000 by the judge D Ajithkumar. If the convict fails to pay the fine, his jail term will get extended by 2 more years. If he is ready to pay the fine, the amount should be handed over to the grandmother of the victim.
The incident took place on April 4, 2019, at around 6.45 am when Nitheesh stabbed Chiyyaram native Neethu (21) before setting her on fire. The court upheld the prosecution's argument that Nidheesh killed her for rejecting his marriage proposal. After purchasing a knife, poison and petrol, Nidheesh reached Neethu's house and entered the house through the back door. He then broke into the bathroom, stabbed Neethu in the neck, chest and abdomen before pouring petrol and setting her on fire. He was soon caught by Neethu's relatives and was handed over to the police.
