THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even after a decade since the completion of probe and submission of chargesheet in the first-ever PSC exam scam in the state, its trial has not reached anywhere. Many aspirants got into crucial departments like the police through mass copying and its trial has been subjugated by the government.

As the chief accused, Kollam native Prakash Lal, committed suicide, the trial of the case halted. With this, those who secured the jobs through illicit means are still continuing in the service without any consequence. The trial is also getting delayed, with the intention to destroy the evidence and important witnesses in the case so that the remaining accused can walk scot-free.

Irregularities in many exams including SI posts

The case has reported several irregularities in many exams including the one conducted for SI posts in the general executive branch. When the accused in the stabbing case held at university college made their way illegally into the constable list one creating a controversy about one and a half years ago, this scam was reported a decade ago.

Scam came to light with an anonymous letter

The first-hand information about the scam was revealed through an anonymous letter. In the letter addressed to PSC, it was alleged that mass scale impersonation and irregularities were reported in Shankaramangalam school in Chavara and later investigation started on the issue. The letter said that Sunderdas a native of Kollam Valathunkal participated in the exam under a false identity. PSC later gave the anonymous letter to then Kollam commissioner Harshita Attaluri for a detailed probe. The scam was later bought out by an investigation team appointed by Kollam east CI B Krishnakumar.

Impersonation and copying

The fake identity was created by pasting the wrong image on the exam hall ticket. In the probe launched to find irregularities in the last grade exam, other irregularities in the SI, LDC and HSA exams were also revealed. The probe also found that the chief kingpin of the scam is Prakash Lal, who was then working in the industrial department’s office in Attingal. The aspirant who enters into the exam hall with a hidden mobile phone was told the answers via the phone. A group under the leadership of Prakash Lal, told answers to several aspirants on real-time via mobile phones when the exams were ongoing.

Prakash Lal’s mysterious death

Even though the probe of the case was completed and its charge sheet was submitted, Prakash Lal’s deadbody was found from a railway track two years ago. It was alleged that his death happened in a mysterious manner. Earlier 39 people were arrested in the case including Prakash Lal. A police man’s relative was also arrested in connection with the case. With this scam, PSC put an end to the practice of self-attestation of certificates and impose a ban on using mobile phones in the exam hall.

Govt decided to move with the case, but no special prosecutors

The trial of the psc exam scam which was reported about 10 years ago, still remains unfulfilled. Until now, the special prosecutor for the case has not been appointed. On the demand of the police, it was decided to appoint a special prosecute but government has not picked anybody for the position until now.
