Hot climate not an obstacle for orange and apple cultivation in Pandalam, Sreenivasan makes income of Rs 50,000 per month

sreenivasan-

PATHANAMTHITTA: Apples and oranges grow in cold climates, but the view of these ripe fruits in the garden of Sreenivasan of Vallyayyath in Pandalam can make one crave for those. Their saplings can also be bought here. He has an income of 50,000 per month through this business.

The cold climate for oranges and apples has been created in the one-acre garden. Artificial ponds and ditches were constructed for this purpose. Blue lilies and amber are made to grow in these along with tilapia fish.

Srinivasan, an eco-tourism gardening contractor, works in Ooty, Mysore and Munnar. That is how interest in orange and apple cultivation was born. Seedlings were brought from there and planted. There are also foreign fruits like Malaysian Champa and Chinese Orange. Both native and foreign apples and red palms are popping up.

Srinivasan says selling saplings is more profitable than selling oranges and apples. The price of a sapling is 500 rupees. Seedlings of nutmeg and anthuriums are also in demand.

Different crops are grown on one acre. Sreenivasan started with paddy cultivation, but with the decline in yield, other crops were started.

Srinivasan started farming at the age of 27. Now, he is 57. Srinivasan is also a writer and sculptor. In 1984, he dedicated his first poem to Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. He also wrote a book about Dr. Philip Mar Chrysostom.

His mother Leelamaniamma and wife Shailaja support Sreenivasan in his farming. He also has a daughter named Vrinda and one and a half-year-old granddaughter Meenukutty.
