Farmer unions accuse railway authorities of diverting, short terminating trains carrying protesters

NEW DELHI: Various farmer unions, including Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) and Bhartiya Kisan Union (Dakaunda), have accused the railway authorities of diverting and short terminating various trains carrying the Delhi-bound farmer protesters.

BKU (Ugrahan) leader Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan said the farmers were boarding the trains to reach the protest site on Delhi borders but the railway authorities have diverted the trains.

Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan said hundreds of farmers from three Punjab's Bathinda, Mansa and Ferozpur had boarded the trains to reach the Delhi borders where thousands of farmers have been camping since November to protest against the Centre's farm laws.

"Diverting trains is highly condemnable. But this does not mean that the farmers have stopped going to Delhi. They are moving in large numbers via tractor trolleys, buses and tempo travellers," Kokrikalan told India Today TV.

There have been allegations that the railway authorities diverted the Delhi-bound trains to derail the farmers' protest against the farm laws.

According to the inputs, Punjab Mail, which runs between Firozepur and Mumbai, was allegedly diverted by the authorities from Rohtak to Rewari and later towards Mumbai.

Farmer unions have alleged that this train was carrying nearly 1,000 farmers who were supposed to deboard at Bahadurgarh, four kilometres before Tikri border. They were forced to get down at Rohtak and Rewari.

Another train, which runs between Ganganagar to old Delhi, was also short terminated at Bahadurgarh.

The Northern Railway authorities have, however, clarified that this train was diverted for a day due to some operational reasons.

Earlier on January 13 and 16, the railway authorities had also diverted, cancelled and short terminated various trains allegedly to stop farmers reaching New Delhi.

The 02903 Mumbai Central to Amritsar Express special train was also cancelled on January 13 and was diverted.

Other trains that were cancelled last month include 15211 Darbhanga-Amritsar special train, 0521 Amritsar-Darbhanga special besides others between January 14 to 16.
