MP mulling Sunday lockdown in 2-3 cities amid rise in COVID-19 cases, CM Shivraj urges everyone to wear mask

NEW DELHI: The Madhya Pradesh government is mulling to impose lockdown on Sundays in 2-3 cities amid rising COVID-19 cases.

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra said that 300-400 COVID-19 cases are being reported in Indore and Bhopal daily and urged people with folded hands to follow guidelines prescribed by the government to prevent the spread of the virus.

“If cases increase at this pace, then we would soon return to the situation that prevailed earlier. With folded hands, I urge people to follow all guidelines,” he said.

Shivraj Chouhan launches 'Mera Mask Meri Suraksha' campaign


On Tuesday, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched ‘Mera Mask Meri Suraksha’, a campaign aimed at raising awareness about COVID-19 in Bhopal. He drew circles in front of shops to ensure social distancing in markets.

“I appeal to everyone to wear face masks,” he added.

He also urged people who are capable to distribute face masks among the underprivileged.

“Government will also try to distribute mask. I’ve asked women, self-help groups, to stitch masks at war footing. I am hopeful that we would not let the situation deteriorate,” the Madhya Pradesh CM said.

Lockdowns imposed in Indore, Bhopal, and Jabalpur

Lockdowns have been imposed in Indore, Bhopal, and Jabalpur in the wake of rising cases. Indore registered 477 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

Over the last few weeks, India has witnessed a sharp increase in the number of coronavirus cases, with 40,715 new cases and 199 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday.

Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu collectively account for 80.90 per cent of the 40,715 cases.

There are currently 8,592 active COVID-19 cases in the state. As many as 2,64,575 patients have recovered from the disease so far, while 3,908 fatalities have been reported, the Ministry said.

To contain the spread of COVID-19, the Centre announced on Tuesday that the vaccine will be made available for everyone above 45 years from April 1.
