MOSCOW: A group of brave and selfless doctors from Russia stayed behind in a burning hospital in the country's Far East on Friday to complete a complicated open-heart surgery.

According to reports, the surgeons had to cut open the patient's chest while an inferno engulfed the 114-year-old Cardiological Centre of Amur State Medical Academy in the southeastern Russian city of Blagoveschensk.

Chief surgeon Valentin Filatov reportedly refused to vacate the operating room despite the raging flames and smoke that had filled the entire building.

Firefighters, who took more than two hours to douse the flames, said they used the fans to keep the smoke out of the operating room and connected a power cable to keep it supplied with electricity, reported Reuters.

As the fire raged on, the team of eight doctors and nurses completed the two-hour surgery before transferring the patient to a nearby hospital.

“We were scared, of course. We are human. We couldn't leave, we had to save the patient… We continued the surgery, what else do you do?. It was a coronary artery bypass graft, one of the most complex cardiac surgeries," said Chief Surgeon Filatov.

Pictures and videos shared on social media show the fire department using water canons and performing rescue operations as heavy smoke billowed out of the building. Another photo taken inside the operating room shows the team of doctors carrying out the surgery.

The emergencies ministry said 128 people were evacuated from the hospital after the fire broke out on the roof.

"The clinic was built more than a century ago, in 1907, and the fire spread like lightning through the wooden ceilings of the roof," the ministry said. Luckily, no one was reported hurt in the incident.

Seeing the selfless work of the surgical team, Mayor Oleg Imameev praised them for risking their lives and remained at their post.
