CHENNAI: The Election Commission has seized cash and precious metals worth Rs 428 crore from Tamil Nadu ahead of the assembly elections in the state.
According to EC, cash worth Rs 225.5 crores and precious metals, including gold, worth Rs 176.11 crore were seized from various locations in the state. Liquor was also seized during the raids conducted by the officials.
The Chief Electoral Officer said most of the money was seized from Karur, Coimbatore, Tirupur and Chennai. 91.56 crore was seized from Ranipet district alone. The highest amount of cash was seized in the last 24 hours when inspections were tightened.
In March, the IT department had seized unaccounted cash worth Rs 16 crore and black income of nearly Rs 80 crore during raids on various entities in the state.
