Polling official skips duty after switching off phone, to be produced in court today

ALAPPUZHA: The Edathua police took into custody a polling official from his house for not appearing for duty after reporting at the polling station. The action was taken against George Alex, the first polling officer at booth number 130, Thalavati of Kuttanad constituency and a teacher at Punnapra Engineering College. Voting went on smoothly as another person was appointed as the first polling officer.

George Alex, who reported at the distribution centre Monday morning, arrived at the polling station along with other officials. He later left from there telling the presiding officer that he will come now. When tried to contact Alex on his mobile phone, it was found switched off. Aleena A Antony, the returning officer was informed at 11 am. She later lodged a complaint with the district police chief, the presiding officer and the Edathua police. In an examination conducted, he was found in his house. He will be produced in the court today as a man missing case was registered. Departmental action will be taken against him.
