THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Former MP A Sampath, who worked in Delhi as the special representative of the Kerala government with cabinet rank, secured Rs 20 lakh as salary and other emoluments. Sampath who got appointed in this post in August 2019, has received the government salary for the last one-and-a-half year. The news came out through the RTI plea filed by Vineeth Thomas submitted before the PRO in charge of Kerala House.

Even though Sampath was appointed with the sole reason to fastrack the funds to be received to the state from the centre and to fulfil other needs of the state government, Kerala house still has no clue about the interventions made by the former Attingal MP in this regard. When it was asked in the plea that how many days did Sampath was there in New Delhi, it was replied that like other government officials, the representative of the Kerala government did not register his attendance.

As salary and other emoluments, the left leader has received Rs 14,20,994 so far. He has also received another Rs 5,85,090 as travel allowance. The former Attingal MP has got Rs 24,792 as telephone allowance and Rs 4,150 for purchasing stationery items. Apart from accommodation, the Kerala government has also appointed officials to assist him.

Sampath resigned from the post, days ahead of the assembly polls. When his appointment stirred off a row, the state government has issued the clarification that he was appointed as a liaison officer to get the benefits from the central government’s programmes and other forms of financial assistance. The opposition had registered strong protest during the time of his appointment when the state was facing severe financial distress induced by floods. UDF MPs even declared that they will boycott programmes in which Sampath will participate.

Sampath was appointed on August 13, 2019. He invited the wrath of opposition and the general public for staying back in Kerala during the lockdown period, without going to Delhi and coordinating activities for bringing Malayalees trapped there back to Kerala. At that time, he justified that due to the ban on train and fight travel, he got trapped in Kerala but the opposition later alleged that he is still continuing in the state, even after public transport was reconstituted partially. During the five-month-long lockdown period, he had secured all emoluments including the special allowance.
