jail

KANNUR: As many as 83 persons, including jail staff, have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Kannur Central jail on Sunday. With this, a total of 154 people were found affected by the disease. In the wake of the spread of COVID, The Freedom Food Production Unit, a chapati unit in the jail and a petrol pump run by prisoners on the Kannur-Taliparamba National Highway have been shut down following the DGP's order.

In the last two days, 144 prisoners and 10 jail staff tested positive for the virus. Affected prisoners are being transferred to the quarantine center in jail. Those in primary contact with patients are being relocated to a quarantine facility in another block. Prison authorities are worried that if more positive cases are reported, the facilities at the jail will be inadequate. COVID patients are currently housed in a separate block with a dormitory system.
