K V Sumesh defeats K M Shaji in Azhikode by more than 5000 votes

KANNUR: LDF candidate K V Sumesh won in the Azhikode constituency. He defeated K M Shaji of the UDF by 5605 votes. A tight contest was witnessed here.

It was a matter of pride for the CPM to win the Azhikode constituency. It was a heavy blow to the party after Muslim League’s K M Shaji from outside Azhikode, a Left turf, won twice from here.

In the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, the UDF excelled in the constituency. Despite securing a majority of 21,857 votes, the UDF could not sustain this achievement in the local elections held two years ago. When the local body election results came out, the lead for the LDF was 6454 votes.
