THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Oxygen beds and ventilators fill up in state where the second wave of Covid is severe. Intensive Care Units and ventilators are full in government hospitals. 85% of the Covid beds are full in private hospitals.

The Covid ICU of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College is full. Only four ventilators are left here. 90% of the oxygen beds are almost full. The situation is the same in Kozhikode Medical College and Parippally Medical College. 52 ICU beds are full in Paripally Medical College. 26 of the 38 ventilators are full. Only seven ICU beds are vacant in Kozhikode Medical College.

138 of the 161 beds in Thiruvananthapuram Medical College are occupied. Majority of the 429 oxygen beds are full. In Alappuzha, 34 of the 76 ICU beds are full. 138 oxygen beds are full. With most hospitals overcrowded, there are fears that the government will suffer a setback if more patients arrive.

The government had earlier hinted that there could be a shortage of hospital beds and ICUs in the coming days due to the severe transmission of Covid situation in the state. The government had sought the help of KTDC to increase the number of Covid beds in the state. This is to provide KTDC hotels for inpatient treatment. The chief minister had the other day informed that the procurement of medical oxygen has started in Thiruvananthapuram.
