NEW DELHI: A BBC report stated that the Kumbh Mela, which took place in Haridwar between March 31 and April 24, played a crucial role in the spread of COVID in the second wave of the pandemic. With the pilgrims returning to various parts of the country after attending the Kumbh Mela, the second wave spread to various states. The report also stated that the fear that the Kumbh Mela could have led to a super spread has been proven right.
Even those who tested positive for COVID after returning from the event did not go to quarantine or take preventive measures. Many used public transportation when they were infected. Pilgrims who returned to certain states were prescribed 14 days of compulsory quarantine and RT-PCR screening after several pilgrims who attended the event tested positive for the virus.
