Central water commission issues flood warning in Pathanamthitta; wind and rain in northern districts, widespread destruction in state

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Central water commission has warned that there are severe possibilities for flood in Kallupara and Thumpamanal in the Pathanamthitta district. The warning comes in the wake of heavy rains which lashed the state due to the impact of the Tauktae cyclone. After evaluating the flood possibilities in the state’s rivers, the central water commission has issued flood threats for the rivers of Manimala and Achankovilar passing through the district.

Central water commission has said that in Kallupara, Achankovilar is flowing above the flood threat levels. The commission has said that the water levels in Kallupara are 0.08 meters above the flood threat level. In another area called Thumbaman, the river flows 0.50 meters above the threat level.

It is predicted that Taukte will enter into the Goan coast as a severe cyclone by today night. Now the cyclone is 180 km away from Amini island. On Tuesday, the Taukte cyclone will enter the Gujarat coast. The cyclone warnings have been given from Kochi to the Karachi coast. Ship transportation has been halted for the time being. The Prime Minister has summoned an emergency meeting following the cyclone.

Many houses and commercial establishments were destroyed in the Alappuzha district following heavy rains and wind. Electricity distribution in the city was disrupted as trees and large beams fell off over the electric lines.

As traffic jam was created in the roads following the rains and winds, a patient who was having a medical emergency died en route to the hospital in Idukki. The dead patient is identified as Vattavada native Raja(50). Raja who had a heart attack last night was taken to the hospital, but he couldn’t reach the hospital as the roads were blocked by uprooted trees. Even though the roads were cleared after removing the trees, he died by today morning at 8.

In heavy rains and resultant violent waves from the sea, heavy destruction occurred in Chettilat island in Lakshadweep. Many homes and fishing boats were destroyed in nature’s fury. The makeshift bridge at Kaipani in Nilmbur-Chookathara got swept away. The makeshift bridge was built as the previous bridge was destroyed in the 2019 floods.

In the Karoor region in Pala also heavy loss of property occurred due to heavy rains. Many big trees and rubber trees got uprooted. Electricity distribution was fully disrupted. Many homes were fully or partially destroyed.

At Palluruthy in Thiruvananthapuram, many homes were submerged underwater. Roofs of many homes were taken away by the violent storms. Relief camps were opened in Thumba, Valiya Veli and Thumba regions in the district.
