Cyclone Yaas weakens, heavy rains as low pressure continues

KOLKATA: Cyclone Yaas that whiplashed Odisha and West Bengal has weakened. The storm has weakened and is continuing as low pressure near Jharkhand. Yaas entered between the port of Dhamra in Odisha and Balasore as extreme cyclone yesterday morning.

The Met Office has warned of heavy rains in Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal as the low pressure has not weakened. In the next 12 hours, the strength of the low pressure will decrease. Odisha Chief Minister said the power supply that has been disrupted will be restored in 24 hours.

It is estimated that the wind has blown at a speed of 155 km per hour. Five deaths were confirmed. 1100 villages were flooded in Bengal. Unconfirmed reports said that about 50,000 people have lost their homes.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is in the state secretariat since yesterday. She said three lakh houses have been damaged. In many places between Balasore and Dhamra, the waves rose up to four meters. Residential centres in Dhamra and Bhadrak were flooded. Several houses have been submerged. As many as 11 lakh people have been evacuated.
