NAGERCOIL: A fire broke out at the Mandaikadu Devi Temple in Kanya Kumari. The fire has caused extensive damages.
The locals were the first to see the major fire erupting from the temple after deeparadhana Wednesday early morning. They immediately informed the Kulachal fire force and the Mandaikadu police. The fire force with the help of locals doused the flames completely.
Kulachal ASP Viswa Sastri reached the spot and examined. A detailed probe is being conducted. Tamil Nadu IT Minister Mano Thankaraj and Kanya Kumari district collector Aravind have reached the temple.
It is believed that after deeparadhana a spark from the lamp may have fell on the silk worn by the Goddess and then the fire may have spread.
A loss of lakhs has been reported. Although the idol of the goddess caught fire it has not been damaged. Half of the roof of the temple has been damaged in the fire.
