MUMBAI: The Navi Mumbai Police has arrested a 32-year-old mechanical engineer accused of sexually assaulting at least 12 women. The accused, identified as Mahesh alias Karan Gupta, was arrested from Mumbai’s Malad area on Monday.

The police had been looking for the accused of the last four months.

According to police officials, the accused created several fake profiles on matrimonial websites to lure “highly educated women”. After getting in touch with women via such websites, he would contact them on their phones and fix a meeting at a pub, restaurant or mall.

According to deputy commissioner of police Suresh Mengade, the accused would sexually assault women during these meetings.

“The accused used a different mobile number for every crime. He changed his SIM every time. Even to book cab rides using Ola or Uber, he would use different SIM cards and not the phone number registered in his name. He worked as a hacker some time ago and has good knowledge of computers. But he was using it in the wrong place," Mengade said.

According to the police, the accused studied at a reputed institute and has worked for big companies in the past.

"Until now, we have information that he committed this crime against 12 women but there seem to be many more. The accused was produced before the court and has been remanded to four days of police custody," stated DCP Mengade.
