KASARGOD: Expensive trees were cut down in a tribal region in the Kasargod district in the Wayanad Muttil model. The forest department has so far registered eight cases in the illegal felling of trees which took place in the hilly areas of the district. 26 cubic meters of timber was seized. Apart from the landowners, a case has also been registered against two persons who tried to collect timber and smuggle it to Perumbavoor.
The trees were cut down on the land adjacent to the reserve forest under the guise of an order from the Revenue Principal Secretary. The timber was mostly caught from Nettanige, Pedra, Parappa, and Balal. The seized timber valued at Rs 17 lakh have been shifted to a government depot. Six cases were registered in the Kasargod forest range and two in the Kanhangad forest range.
Nasser and Saji, both timber traders and residents of Badiyadukka, are accused in all the six cases in the Kasargod range.
