THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: 'Agniparvatham pukanju' (volcano erupts)-when Vayalar wrote this song for the film 'Anubhavabhavangal Paalichakal', he only had characters in mind. Sathyan was rushed to hospital with bleeding from his nose during the shooting of the same film. And then he passed away.

Today, half a century has passed since Sathyan's demise.

The movie 'Anubhavangal Paalichakal' concludes by showing that Sathyan's character Chellappan is dead. He was carrying a volcano inside even as he portrayed characters. He never told anyone about the disease.

He used to go to the hospital once a week and have a blood transfusion. He did this for over a year. He was eager to finish all the movies that came his way.

During this period he acted in films like Karakanakkadal, Panchavankadu, Sarasayya, Inquilab Zindabad, Vimochana Samaram and Pavakutty. The world saw these films after his death. Sathyan also bagged the state award for best actor for his performance in Sarasayya posthumously.

Sathyan, who took off his police uniform and started acting at the age of 41, quickly changed the face of Malayalam cinema. He was introduced in the movie Athmasakhi. He glowed bright for 20 years.

Released in 1954, Neelakuyil became one of the most memorable films of his life. Neelakuyil is the first Malayalam film to be recognized nationally.

Sathyan, who has played many different roles on the silver screen, has also graced the roles of a clerk, teacher, subedar major in the British Army, police sub-inspector, loving husband and beloved dad.
